Utility Sink Drain Into Floor Drain

One of the problems you will have is if your sewer backs up it will back up into your sink drain.

Locate the room s drain pipe and pick where you ll attach the sink s pipes to it. Plumbers must connect drains to the main sewer line and typically leave a pvc or metal pipe extending. In this configuration the sink serves as a reservoir for the discharge from the washing machine then the 1 1 2 drain line from the sink will meter the flow into the existing 1 1 2 drain line at the proper rate to insure good flow under gravity flow conditions without. This is the new pvc drain pipe.

The drain hose from the washing machine is hung on the edge of the laundry sink. It usually drains without issue on occasion the water fills the sink and drains slowly and on a couple occasions the water from the sink decided to drain to my floor. If the drain runs to a sewer pit which is not the same as a sump pit it s permissible to drain a washing machine or sink in the floor drain. Set the utility sink in place against the wall where the rough plumbing drain is installed.

Some places allow grey water drainage into their overflow drain but most don t. Also you would be require to secure the pvc to the floor in some way. I will be putting the utility sink in the empty space between the dryer and the white wall in the picture the washing machine is immediately to the right of the dryer. The funny thing is i cant find wet pipes to see where the water came out of. Water is drained from the washing machine directly into the sink. Some utility sink setups even forgo the standard u trap and instead dump into or near a floor drain nearby. A laundry sink is only required to have a 1 1 2 trap and drain line.

This may sound crude but in areas where the floor is easily and frequently washed catching and collecting all the waste matter that is rinsed down the sink can prevent larger problems from arising. Cut through the drain pipe with a hacksaw. It ll run along the room near either the floor or ceiling depending on where you re installing the sink. The original copper pipe was 1 1 4 and the new pvc is 1 1 2.

This isn t a huge deal but could get messy.
